International atomic energy Agency (IAEA) praised the reliability of the nuclear safety regime in Armenia, reported news site News.am.
The Armenian nuclear power plant, the only one in the region, is located near the town of Metsamor (approximately 30 kilometers South of Yerevan). NPP was commissioned in 1980 and stopped in March 1989 after the earthquake in December 1988, which killed 25 thousand people. Re-enacted in November 1995 due to an acute energy crisis in the country. According to experts, the nuclear power plant can operate until 2016, but the EU insists on stopping her work.
“The authorities shall take appropriate measures to ensure the security of nuclear and other radioactive objects and materials”, – stated in the message of the IAEA, based on the results of the two-week review of compliance in Armenia measures of nuclear safety, which was conducted by members of the International Advisory missions on the physical protection.
Experts from five countries-members of the mission and the IAEA met with the legislative and regulatory framework of Armenia in the sphere of ensuring security of nuclear and other radioactive material and associated facilities and activities. They studied the security mechanisms in the transport of radioactive sources.
A group of experts got acquainted with the system of physical protection at nuclear power plants (NPP) and in three facilities that use or store sources of high radioactivity, including at the National center of Oncology named after academician Parnagian and store radioactive waste. Experts noted the significant progress in improving nuclear safety in the country since the previous survey in 2003.
The IAEA team was composed of seven experts from five countries – members of the Agency and the IAEA. Led a group of senior adviser to the Commission United States nuclear regulatory Nancy Fragances. The program, under which the group has worked in Armenia is carried out by the IAEA in 1995.
