Serie A: Gattuso launches Napoli on a stormy day

Gennaro Gattuso’s debut as a coach at Napoli had to meet the storm after a 1-2 defeat against Parma at home in the round of 16 Serie A.

Before tasting the eighth match in a row without winning, Napoli under the new coach Gattuso (who replaced Carlo Ancelotti was dismissed in the middle of the week) soon met the real storm. The debut of the famous Italian midfielder had to depart later than half an hour after a storm damaged the roof of San Paolo Stadium.

Later on the pitch, the reign of the former AC Milan coach had a poor start when Napoli fell to Parma in the match they needed to win to dispel the gloomy atmosphere in San Paolo. Two goals from Dejan Kulusevski (4 minutes) and Gervinho in the last minute of Parma made Arkadiusz Milik’s 1-1 equalizer goal failed to bring a smooth debut for Napoli fans to Gattuso.

“This team is playing with too much a mentality. It is difficult to endure the whistling of fans. We will have a lot of work to do”, coach Gattuso exclaimed after the match. Indeed, the defeat to Parma extended the suffering of Napoli when the Southern Italian team had never tasted Serie A victories in the past 50 days.

The legs of stars Lorenzo Insigne, Jose Callejon or Dries Mertens seem to be worn in the context of Napoli facing enemies in the outside. “Insigne? He is not a problem, he is not the only one who plays badly”, added Gattuso. Before Gattuso arrived, Ancelotti had to leave after the opposition against the leadership despite Napoli having just won tickets to the round of 16 Champions League teams.

From the reigning runner-up and the candidate, Napoli has fallen behind when it is 17 points behind the top team Inter Inter (21 compared to 38) but has played more than 1 match. Even if not timely regain confidence, Napoli may have to sit outside the game in the European arena next season when it fell to 8th place, 7 points behind Atalanta team Atalanta. Therefore, Gattuso’s work will soon be as high as mountains, in which the immediate goal is to win all 3 points on the trip to Sassuolo yard next week.
